As someone that lives in a storm prone area and has gone through more hurricanes than I can count, I'm alarmingly desensitized to thunder and lightning. In fact, the only time I'm concerned is when it's striking nearby... and I rush to unplug everything and I worry about losing another appliance. That's about it. It's bizarre when you can physically see lightning touch down several hundred yards away and your first thought is, "Thank fuck it didn't fry the TV." Although sometimes the thunder is so loud that it reverberates and mildly shakes the place, which is fucking annoying especially if you're sleeping. And turns virtually every dog into a shivering and whining mess.
The irony is that Category 1 hurricanes and the people that freak out about them (basically anyone above Virginia) are hilarious when there have been many, many thunderstorms in my area that put Category 1 hurricanes to shame, and have lasted sometimes longer. Although most are violent, short affairs that come in bands of severe weather and are gone almost as quickly as they came. "Don't like the weather? Wait 15 minutes and it'll change." is a saying for a reason.
I do have my own phobia which sometimes comes up in manga (which, when you think about it, is more than you'd realize), but I react differently than most characters. Like "I am a hammer and everything I see is a nail with a bullseye on the head" type reaction.
