I'm going to defend him little. I'm pretty sure that he had been observing, but not stalking her for over a year now and seen her positive traits for long time now. I m pretty sure that that had been implied in the chapter. When the unberlla incident happened it ws pretty clear that he was not in good place mentaly. Tht being said his sheer amount of dediction is still little to much.
