I saw this on Twitter. A post that Viz Media tweeted; "Being mixed-race in Japan like Kazumi means facing daily trials of racism, microaggressions, and otherness. This is a journey of resilience, hope, and the search for coexistence."

I thought to myself that it isn't that serious, and thought people will have mixed reviews on the piece. However, I looked at the comments under the post and it was mostly hate. Not against the manga in question, but against the character. It didn't take much for twitter users prove the authors point.

How is it that Americans being racist (reactively or otherwise) proves the author's point about racism towards mixed-race Japanese people by the Japanese?

I'm all for acknowledging when the negative reaction against a manga proves the exact point of said manga-- probably my favorite manga has elicited such a reaction. It's just, that couldn't be what you're observing.

It’s getting serialized because it’s a manga about a genuinely underrepresented aspect of Japanese culture with an interesting premise that hasn’t been done before in this format. These things don’t get published for no reason, and it’s not stealing a spot by getting serialized. If there were better manga to put up, then I’m sure they’d be getting serialized as well.

Go read other manga that suit your tastes.

Not interesting at all, we see the same point on Netflix/games/comics/movies every few months (minority group is victims and everybody else is bad)

I cant remember even 1 that is successful

If they cant get used to the calture and will get offended by everything they can go back to their country

It does steal another spot, thats how real life works there are limited spots 🤷‍♂️

I agree with you on the last point tho

Sounds like you’re just really dense or just willfully ignorant but since you can’t put two and two together I’ll show how it proves the author’s point. Japan’s westernization has been through American means which has translated into sentiments that modern Japanese people hold. Japan is a mostly ethnically homogenous country, so most interaction with non-Japanese people has been through media exposure. Look at the depictions of black people in manga like dragon ball, literally based off of racist caricatures. Basically if racism is already pretty bad in the west, even with melting pots of different people and racism being negatively regarded, imagine how shit it is to be in Japan as someone who isn’t racially Japanese. The conversation in regards to racism towards mixed people in Japan is basically nonexistent why is it a problem to show this aspect of Japan? Sorry it’s not kawaii anime sugoi imperialist propaganda bullshit you fucking weeaboo to all you fucking 4channers spamming your disgusting wojacks

Racist American responses to this Japanese manga have nothing to do with Japanese racism towards half-Japanese people in Japan, which is what this manga is presumably going to attempt to depict.

The Japanese do not need help being discriminatory. They did not have to get it from us. Ask the Ainu, or the Ryukyuan peoples. Or the Koreans. Or the Chinese.

I'm also cutting the response off here, because it's apparent that you didn't even grasp what I was saying.

I don't remember this spell from Harry Potter

We don’t know yet if it’s interesting. Personal tastes aside, seeing the perspective of half Japanese people in Japan has not been done before, and it hasn’t been released in a format we can read yet, so story quality has yet to be determined. Unless you know Japanese of course.

They were born in that country, they’re half Japanese, it’s their culture, and it happens to dislike their existence. Also Culture doesn’t excuse racism.

It earns a spot. It doesn’t steal shit. You’re putting a negative connotation on something that every manga has to go through. There isn’t affirmative action for manga, an editor saw the value of publishing this story, and so it’s being made.

Stop arguing with people like this because it will go nowhere. They don't care because they hate anything that has to do with Black people doing well. They can't connect with it and it frustrates them, hence why you see them lash out over this. It's honestly pathetic.

These same type of people a couple of years ago were crying about "cancel culture" and how they were getting silenced on the internet by the big bad "SJW's" (Social Justice Warriors). Now they are going around saying this should be canceled for X reason. These people have literally become what they hate.

They will certainly drag you down to their level of misery. Ignore them and move on. I just block these people because a large majority of the anime community is racist. Finding like-minded people is the best way to avoid people like this. Go read the manga if you want to. If you read it and you like it, then you will like it. If you don't then, you won't. They won't read it at all. They will do what they do every time and dislike it and spread hate.

P.S. Regarding your stuff about Twitter: Don't take Twitter seriously. Most of the replies on there were from the West just being racist, and people posing as a Japanese person, as they always do.

You can’t let ignorance fester unless you want it to spread, but yeah… I won’t be arguing anything else here.

Affirmative action isn't real in manga
Editor decides to greenlight a story that genuinely Japanese people have no interest in reading

Also just because it hasn't been done before, doesn't mean it has to, not all stories have meaningful worth, in this case money. If the creator had any sense they would realize that it's bad idea to get it serialized and post it on their Pixiv or try to sell it at Dojinshi Conventions instead. They stole the spot of someone else's manga that was better suited to it

Viz Media publishes out a lot of slop manga with cookie cutter premises, but this you take issue with. Gee, I wonder why.

Personally I think this is more interesting than yet another shounen/isekai that we've all seen before because I can't for the life of me recall any manga that tackles this particular topic. Looking forward to seeing if they deliver.
