It may be a self-fulfilling circle. The japanese had an untouchable caste hundreds of years ago, similar to india. They were discriminated for their jobs like gravedigging, leather tanning, and general country labor. They got abused, so they lashed out, so they got abused harder, so they lashed out harder, etc. It even goes onto the present day. It's one big unending cycle, with each side racing the other to form and fuel a grudge-filled superghost first, to kill the other side.

That's why karma in Asia is very scary. These people who commited atrocities will rot in cycles of hell for a long time, the victims ended up vengeful spirits as they cannot forget their sufferings and will make sure the descendents pay the weight of the ancestors sins.

I always do like the neatness of a well for a horrible curse like this. Slow, bad way to die. And the clear metaphor of like. Something being done so wrong in the groundwater.

Also worth considering, these people were playing the only game. They were being punished for not adequately destroying someone. The village wanted being outcast to be a fate worse then death. We'll be worse to you, many times over, until you make it that way.
