Why did it end badly? Because people actually survived the previous story? I would say it was internally consistent and ended neatly, with all threads resolved, while maintaining an incredible level of tension and fear throughout. Horror does not necessarily mean it must always end with a nihilistic bloodbath and a diabolus ex machina...that's just what sells gory movies.
