The only thing I can think of where it would be okay without her being his daughter is some horribly tragic circumstances.

I mean if he is the only option and the mother is paying rent then I think it would be fine

I imagine four scenarios:

1 - The girl is MC's daughter, so story about reconnecting with the daughter and get together again with his ex-girlfriend

2 -The girl is not MC's daughter, so story about him becoming her stepfather and get together again with his ex-girlfriend

3 - Ex-girlfriend has no interest on MC romantically and her daughter (not related to MC) become the love interest after some time skip

4 - Oyakodon

The daughter looks to be 16-17 yo. And with 17 years without contact, I can conclude she's most likely his child.

Whats nice about the mother is shes doing something that would allow her daughter to be in a more comfortable place instead of being homeless.
Whats shitty about the ex girlfriend is taking advantage of the kindness of her ex boyfriend and even bringing her daughter with her...
