This has been my main gripe since the start tbh. These people... they aren't talking like wtf. Normal people would've start asking questions from the startThis manga can totally make 50 chapters without explaining nothing about Minori’s dad or make any concrete progress between mc and Kyou, and I hate thatLet’s be honest, if they leave the apartment now there will be no more story, so they won’t… imo, this doesn’t check the cuck manga cases for me, but at least mc should ask Kyou about her circumstances, she’s always cheerful and all so she’s not that traumatized for all we know, so he should at least TRY to ask her, and if she reacts bad to it he can always withdraw… But nah, he just stays there and blush sometimes… cuz progress isn’t good

Chapter 9 is here! If we forget how the premise started, this might very well seem like the most common Rom-com scene you have ever seen (if we assume the protagonists are teenagers, which is how they behave more often than not). The jokes are getting better, although fans of Kyou might feel bad that 90% of the times, she is the butt of joke ("At least make some miso soup..." not even imaginary Kyou can catch a break, chapter after chapter! ). The friend being the one who's the most invested in getting the two together is mildly amusing, although given the lack of characters, and that the daughter seems to hate the idea, he is the only one left for the task, pretty much. Our MC is also regressing to his teenager years, it seems, being embarrassed of his work in front of the girl he likes (as if painting nudes is this taboo thing in the year 2025).
Of course, like with most of the previous chapters, the plot does its best to avoid any and all serious talks about the situation and how we got here. It's hard to gauge how much they like each other, but I guess this is all heading toward them dating, after some drama with Minori (which, given how things got solved last time, might last all of 5 panels).
While this chapter moves the romantic plot forward a bit, it's disappointing to note that it's only happening because someone other than the main protagonists is forcing something to happen, which is as close as it gets to the author going "because I say so" to the audience. With this kind of tame, uninteresting material, it's hard to attract fans OR haters! I am starved for the fighting in the comments, but I guess Kyou eternally stepping on rakes (or headbutting doors, like in this chapter) and increasing her rake collection well beyond the closet's ability to store them is something I am starting to grow fond of.
With this glacial pacing, I predict that they might hold hands by chapter 200 (if this doesn't get axed sooner, I guess). I can't wait (and when I say can't wait, I mean "I sincerely hope it won't come to this") for the inevitable rom-com developments, like a love rival (perhaps one of his models), a turbolent encounter (perhaps Kyou's ex will show up) and Kyou flip-flopping between staying and leaving at least 10 times (with at least one fake out, where they leave but eventually come back).

Is there some thread somewhere making people go "this is a cuckolding manga?" Is that why people keep coming in here and getting mad? Cause while much is unspoken, it's pretty clear that whoever the father was, he is no longer in the picture. Otherwise, they'd be living with him or he'd be with them.
Actually, the friend was pretty sure that those two had married. That's why he said "married, huh," not because he thought she was. He was basically like "oh shit, Kyou's here! You two are fuckin' finally back together again, and he's painting portraits after not for seventeen years"
Only to then go "wait how are you not." I'm glad he's here, though. Neither of them seem to be able to be clear about what they actually want, even though it's super obvious. The short chapters usually just focus on one or two emotional beats, so we haven't really been able to explore their relationship much. Especially because we have such a limited PoV.
It's kind of amazing that the major romantic beat just... wasn't noticed, though. Kyou is a special kind of airheaded character, which I hope we see explored more. Like, she comes into the room Takaharu has kept off limits, only to find it full of beautiful paintings of her. She notices they're beautiful and are amazed by them, but doesn't notice they're of her. Just... a staggering wiff.
I actually really like how the situation and the past has been just avoided so far. I see it as characterization: Takaharu doesn't want to know, and Kyou is perfectly fine not telling him. There's a real 'roll with it' feeling I get out of these two, and it fits with what else we see out of their personalities. Takaharu thinks and feels a lot of things that he just refuses to actually acknowledge, preferring to let them pass him by. Kyou is perfectly fine existing entirely in the present, and has to be pushed over and over again to plan for the future and think about moving out. Neither of them want to talk about what happened before. So they don't.
I think it's obvious that they like each other an awful lot, just seem unable to either communicate that or even realize it. Takaharu is constantly thinking of her, will do anything to see her smile, is afraid of her suffering off on her own, feels warm and happy when he eats and drinks with her... has started painting portraits again after 17 years and all of them are her...
Kyou is also very warm and happy around him, to the point that Minori notices and is pretty sure they're going to get married, that's the whole reason her mom even came. Which is probably closer to the truth than Kyou will admit to herself.
I think this is a romance between two people who can't admit or perhaps can't understand that they deeply love each other. So far, it's obvious to the people who interact with them, but the two of them seem to avoid it.

I’m not completely sure either but I think the implication is that he was cucked by not being the partner she had the kid with and that he (maybe?) is thinking “it should have been me”.
I don’t think the MC has realized they’re of her either, which is kind of tragic in a way. His friend clearly does know that though and it might be why he suggested that he ask he to pose for sketches. It might be more on the nose to say that the paintings look like Kyou did many years ago, which means they look more like the daughter right now. Awkward…

My issue is that we have a set up that's like this:
1: Have 2 characters
2: Have them not talk for 20 years
3: Have girl show up with daughter in tow and expects guy to give them lodging
4:???????
5: KAWAII DESU NE RELATIONSHIP // PROFIT
There's too many corners that have been cut to try to get to the cute relationship. I want the build up. I want the journey of these two characters. But I'm left with just ditzy mom showing up and guy rekindling old romance with me with a thousand questions burning in my mind instead of having the warm fuzzies.
