The forbidden rule of averages is that the average doesn't exist. But maybe we can find the average-average or the average-average-average or the dreaded sampling distribution average? (science loves the last) We'll just keep averaging until we find it, this average thing. It still doesn't seem to exist. Why not step out into the sun or give your cat a pet?

oh that’s a thing. Nepali places were the only ones I suffered at in JP, but the scale was never predictable.

probably not foolproof but the trick (in my experience) when trying a new restaurant/cuisine with that many options for spice levels is to ask "which level of spiciness is closest to (wasabi/jalapeno/whatever)?" and adjust your predictions based on that, unless you're one of those "put 'make him regret being born' as a request on the order slip" people with zero fear of diving in too deep on accident
