I don't know if I would necessarily call her mean. She's strict about wanting them to work, but it's not like she treats them poorly.

It's interesting that we mostly see the mom through the lens of her two slacker kids, so she comes off as a bossy killjoy most of the time, when to be fair, you can't really blame her for being tetchy at her moocher children.

She has been rude, and I think she should tone it down some but she doesn't treat them poorly. She's pushed Haruka to actually leave the house and wear more than just sweatsuits. She welcomes their friends over, and more importantly they feel comfortable around her. She's not perfect by any means, but you can tell she loves and cares for them. If she were truly mean, she would be stunting her children's growth instead of watching them blossom like they are.
