Probably no relation but there is A TON of oneshots with exactly this element and maaany also include a wacky "triangle" with a pretty much established main pair and a "loser" just like here.

I‘ve remember like two that did get a serialization and they forcefully included the "loser“ getting romantically involved and went the ~everyone happy winning all well tehe~ route.
Needless to say they absolutely sucked and had zero of the original charm left. I think this type of story is better off kept short
