Sure, sure, most snack bars are clean, but the mizu-shobai spectrum goes a bit like this:

Regular bar with pretty waitresses < Snack bar < Hostess Club < Grope bars, Brothels, Soaplands and the like.

Both snack bars and hostess clubs are in a gray area, where they dangle the possibility that, if you're a frequent enough patron spending enough money on a girl, you might be able to take her on offsite dates. Whether that actually materializes depends on the particular shop and the particular girl, with that being far less common in snack bars.

As a disclaimer, take what I say with a grain of salt, since most of what I know is from documentaries and articles on the subject. I've never been to a hostess club, and I've only been to a snack a couple of times, once by mistake, and once because it was the only thing close to a western style bar in a small town; and of course, being a lone gaijin (that is, not introduced by a japanese regular), I was treated as an amusing oddity, not as a serious customer to keep for the long term.

I think the whole reason she wanted to get Sumire is to then show her to the parents and make them go "You know what, we were kinda harsh on that comedian before. You can bring him back just don't ever bring this woman back."

Sure, Yuusei pulled a fast one on Sumire, but Sumire got to drink some fancy sake. I'd say she came out alright. I think stealing Mika's sake was the dirtier move. And the student council president blackmailing him was pretty dirty, too. But none of that adds up to Sumire's lifetime of mischief and nincompoopery. Everybody is getting corrupted except for Hiyori- She's an innocent little kitten!

My personal conclusion is that she's like 99% his mom. Still don't know why he calls her that instead of "okaa-san".

Yuusei calls her mom (母さん) in the first chapter, when telling Sumire that she owes her. Which btw, shows him as being a manipulative little shit, the stuff in the current chapter didn't come out of nowhere.

While Sumire has always kinda been a bad person (that we still like), I do not like the way Yusei used alcohol to trick convince her. Feels a bit scummy for him; at least from what we've seen so far.

It is scummy, it's something that Sumire herself would do to someone to get ahead. That said, it's not like she doesn't deserve it lol.

To be fair, Mika is a head of a hostess bar, and that's often how female keepers of brothels and brothel-adjacent establishments are called accross the world, Japan included; female keepers of hostess bars are most definitely called so.

Overall, while my working theory is that they are mother and son, there's enough legroom for a twist that they are effectively so, but not biologically, like she started taking care of him as an acquiantance or a relative of someone who passed away. Bonus points in that if they are NBR, Sumire's chances to officially enter and win the race for Yuusei shoot up considerabl
