This doesn't really work, since the rumour was about the president, not the CEO. The president is the younger one, so he would be Mitsuko's father. The father however is also the one who designed the mansion, not the grandfather.
Hmm, so the rumors spread in the late 80s while this story takes place in 2001 based on Hayasaka's age in 2022. With 12 years in between, it would be possible that grandpa was president at the time and dad inherited the company somewhere in the timeframe. That said, Mitsuko was born in 1989 (right around when the rumors were spreading) so you're right that the rumors being about grandma don't make sense unless the abuse became a rumor long after the fact when the girl was already grown up (which would be a good way for the story to get swept under the rug as nonsense). Mitsuko's birth having a connection to those rumors does become another possibility though.

There's also the possibility grandma is not actually Mitsuko's grandmother, but her age isn't that crazy since she looks like she's probably in her 50s which would make sense if she was under 20 when Mitsuko's dad was born and Mitsuko's dad was 25 or younger when Mitsuko was born.

I guess my main thought now would be that grandma probably is not the girl in question unless the rumors occurred with a time delay, but whatever happened to the girl in question probably happened to grandma as well.

Aww, maybe the next volume. I'd love to see more of the mangaka's doodles, I'm really curious to see the iterations the mc went through in the design phase to get to what we have now since they said in an interview it took about 10 designs.

Oh and they draw the mc for promo art pretty often, here's something they did for being put on myanimelist's You Should Read This Manga 2026.

Look at those legs I am very very normal about this character and may or may not have a stash of all of the official art.
Speaking of which, thank you for pointing out the art contest for who would be the Hen na Ie mangaka. If anyone's curious, go here: https://illust.daysneo.com/ and type in 変な家 in the search bar, if you see any entries from around Nov-Dec 2021, those are entries to the contest. Some of my favorite non-winning ones are: the one where Uketsu's the MC (complete with mask and full body suit, but wearing a dress shirt and pants over top of it for some reason) and Kurihara looks like Tony Stark (sunglasses, goatee, suit), and another where the MC is a woman (I know, blasphemy!) named 雨窪 結子 (Amakubo Yuiko) and Kurihara is some tall, buff hunk.

Thanks for the translation!

I don't really have anything to add to everyone else's speculation, but the mystery is exciting

Usually I get them off twitter, but the mangaka has no account so they're posted by various affiliated sources like the manga publishers and such. There's also the postcard illustrations that come with the special Tsutaya editions of the books, which are only available with watermarks online but people also post photos of them for resale (if I'm insane enough I could buy and scan them...).

I've thought about starting an archive if it would be useful to anyone else.

Thank you once again, I probably wouldn't have known about these if you didn't mention them. You're a goldmine of information. Please do create that archive, that'd be wonderful. These illustration cards are just... Yowza.

I'm glad I could help! I discovered Uketsu's works through this manga and I really enjoyed his novels too (read all 3 officially translated ones) but I've just been so obsessed with the characters in this adaptation it's led to this haha.

Welp, I started an archive with whatever I had on hand, some of it is more obvious stuff like the volume covers I'm uploading to make sure I have everything centralized in one place, but hopefully this helps keep track of the more niche things. I figured tumblr was an easy way to host and organize it. I'm also thinking I might compile the Uketsu references in the manga with the referenced material there but for now it's just got illustrations, here it is: https://strangeholes.tumblr.com/tagged/archives

If anyone notices any art I missed feel free to let me know. Just be careful navigating out of the archives tag since I also repost whatever crumbs of fanart exist that may or may not be raunchy in some cases especially when I commission them.

Ok I was wrong about that small room in the last chapter if it was the toilet. This house isn't just terribly designed, it's INTENTIONALLY designed to get someone killed. Anyone with a shred of common sense would know that putting the toilet where the door swings into where stairs going up ends is asking for someone to fall down said stairs. Specifically this is designed to kill someone trying to get INTO the toilet, if this was on the other side it would be someone trying to kill anyone trying to go up the stairs. This was incredibly targeted design to kill the grandma and to make it a gawd damn spectacle at it too because of how it's literally impossible to go to any of the other rooms in the downstairs without going through the fo
Yeah I feel like the big focus on the bookshelf/probably-hidden-passage is just to make you lose focus on how the bathroom door opens.
make sense, but i have 2 questions
why kill the grandma ? Since the son take over the company why need to kill her ?
and how he know that grandma will go alone ? she can ask for help

yeah is clearly that not accidient. The grandma room no window, cover by rooms. The way to the toilet has no handrail and toilet far away grandma room and near the stair
Mitsuko lying about manga, she just need a person to prove she was in the room when grandma fall, that why Mitsuko call her wake up in 5am because Mitsuko know that time her grandmother wake up
but why grandma not accept the help although she had a bad leg ?

The house is clearly designed to keep grandma trapped, no windows, in the middle of the floor, the only door going to the same hallway as Mitsuko, also on the second floor despite having a bad leg.
I wonder, maybe she was trying to scape when she fell?
