OK so. This was bad. I need to articulate my thoughts on this somewhere and here is a comment section for it, so. SPOILERS ABOUND, I BRING UP SPECIFICS.
It is SO LONG for how little happens in it. And also simultaneously how much happens in it. By chapter 14 Chizuru has confessed her love to Azumi. This development is ignored, talked around, and at times downright contradicted for the vast majority of the manga. There is a male love interest introduced that Chizuru is an unforgivable bitch to, which goes nowhere (except it does, except it doesn't?) The manga is haphazardly combined with the Yaoi Hen series the author worked on, and then half the screentime is devoted to these characters that had no introduction. While ostensibly a yuri series, Azumi only shows the most remote interest in Chizuru in CHAPTER 73. and all throughout, the only things Chizuru does oto try and win her girl are harass her and cause drama.
Which brings me to another point-- there is an atrocious amount of sexual harassment in this manga. Chizuru is molested by at least 3 different guys. Her boyfriend is a grown ass man dating a sixteen-year-old, and tries to rape another sixteen-year-old. CHIZURU HERSELF rapes her crush's crush-- hence 'unforgivable' used above-- and molests/coerces Azumi nigh constantly.
And even with all the screentime devoted to all these motherfuckers wet dreams, we barely get any goddamn clue about them as characters. Chizuru: bitch queen, homeless, promiscuous. Azumi: from Fukuoka, clumsy, wants to be a screenwriter. these are the two MAIN CHARACTERS, and this is basically all we get. Reasons why Chizuru ditched her home and survives exclusively by tricking men into letting her sleep in their houses? nah. Relevance of Azumi's dreams beyond the dead-on-arrival het plotline? none. Godssakes, they have an aspiring screenwriter in a romance with a rising starlet and it NEVER COMES UP BETWEEN THEM.
And this needlessly long essay doesn't even touch on the sheer confusion of the plot. Is chizuru actually pregnant? Was she actually raised as a boy for 12 years? Is azumi actually in love with/exclusively dating kobayashi? Is Sato, from the inexplicable mashup, actually a girl? Does Azumi actually have an iota of interest in Chizuru? What the fuck was up with Azumi's nameless friend killing herself? They just flip flop between the answers to any of these questions at any given moment for ninety four chapters-- you CAN'T squeeze a cohesive narrative out of this thing.
I liked the first 17-ish chapters of this. It was a cute budding romance between two complete opposites, and it had the potential to go interesting places with how absolutely fucked up Chizuru is (let us not forget the chapter 53 dream sequence, whatever the fuck that was, on top of her honeypotting) in contrast to Azumi. The contrast between Chizuru's... everything and her big stupid disaster crush was funny, and I wanted to see how they could develop to get Azumi a megababe gf and Chizuru some stability in her carfire life-- probably with some interesting obstacles from Chizuru's side keeping it from being a basic romcom w no stakes. Instead, 80+ chapters of sexual harassment and storylines that added nothing to Azumi's nigh-blank slate and made Chizuru a genuinely horrendous person. I'll go to bat for some pretty fucked up girl characters (Asuka Soryuu and Azula ATLA my beloveds) but Chizuru? There's nothing to defend.
This manga is a double-decker nothingburger with a side of oversexualized and creepy fries. Could have been more fun if the author was thinking about the plot instead of the tits, but here we are. Some of the pinups and chapter bonuses are pretty surreal and fun as standalone drawings. This comment is longer than I can justify. Adieu
