This manga keeps on the rollercoaster of mood swings, and honestly, it just doesn't work well.

Awesome! And contrary to above I'm really enjoying the contrasting mix of "humor, romance and heroics" with "but the situation is actually serious, the enemy is legitimately damn strong, and the enemy does in fact legitimately want to win". Evil organizations don't have to be incompetent or edgelord, they can enjoy a tasty crepe before crushing hopes and dreams and bringing a valuable asset back into the fold.

Don't agree, adds to the disjoint feel. Everyone except Hayate is in fact a monster invader from another dimension even if they look human. Honey falls for Hayate sure, but to some extent she ends up on the side of good for her own motives rather than some pure revelation about the worth of humanity. It makes total sense none of the antinoids, including her, are going to angst over random human death. As for Hayate, she's naturally upbeat but also not a professional and is doing her best to just get through things. A lot has happened in a hurry, and the appearance and actions of her enemies throw her off just like it throws off us in the audience. And it doesn't seem like there is a mountain of corpses every attack, though apparently that's in part because X wanted to pursue her human/antinoidization experiments all along so they were purposefully stringing things out a bit. So she hasn't been forced to constantly face tragedy. Joking in the face of despair is something people do anyway, sometimes it's laugh or cry.

i feel like the author pulling this cliche may have just shot themselves in the foot regarding this story. It was going perfectly and now..... complete tonal change that basically undoes everything that's happened before and adds melodrama to something that doesnt need it. i am disappointed.

If this isnt resolved in the next chapter or two, and instead is dragged on for many chapters, i think it will seriously hurt the story.

I've wondered how any rider fan could not compare it Build. It's amazing that the author came up with the design accidentally.

@Meijin As someone who watch Build seeing that the X antinoid form similarity with Rapid Rabbit, I must agree that it remind me of Max Hazard. Aaaand Honey and Rouge similarity in the role, Also with how Evol and Rouge relationship with Honey and X relationship feels quite similar... I must say that there is a huge possibility that the author watch Kamen Rider Build

I'm very late to the party but I just noticed that the apartment complex is called Nagihono, which is also the pairing name for the lead girls in the first Pretty Cure series. Is this an intentional reference or a happy coincidence??
