I'm not overly interested in the romantic scenario presented here, but there's a mystery angle with the girl, which is intriguing. Hope it develops into something actually compelling and not just turn out to be a nothingburger.

Okay let me document what we know so far that may come into play later:

1. The childhood friend and MC moved into the area around the same time. With the MC moving first and then the childhood friend moving after. There's a few theories you could speculate here as you could suspect the childhood friend likes our MC as supported by the nudge in dialogue during the library scene, but there's nothing concrete so far

2. Heroine girl is caught off guard when MC says that she "acts like a different person". We're most likely going to be revealed later on a second side to her personality but as of right now it's hard to guage

3. The matching pair of sun and moon earrings. Since she's wearing the cresent moon earring, we can assume this elusive other person is wearing a sun earring. I predict since it's a romance the earring will belong to a girl, however speculation on who the earring belongs to at all could basically be anyone. It could be a deceased older/younger sibling, a childhood friend who got into an accident. I mean anything is on the table here so it's pretty hard to judge. Heck, it could even be a jekyll and hyde situation where the other person lives inside of her and the earring changes into a sun. This crackpot theory is combining the previous mystery with our current one. Do i think it's gonna happen? no??? but it's fun to think about.

Akatsuki has his surname in Kanji as Red Moon not Dawn, but I still think the Sun and/or Moon earrings matches his surname.

The guy being into puppetry and the girl supposedly being out of hospital and maybe dying have reminded me of Air. It also seems to be divided into arcs so perhaps there will be time travel or alternate timelines. That would be a very mid 2000s manga vibe and would put it above most of the shallow modern slop we get for manga these days.

My entry into the most schizo theory competition: The heroine who dies at the end is Kaede. He's the heroine in the metaphorical "helpless love interest who needs saving" kind of way. This is secretly a time travel story where Kumomi is trying to save her lover from his fate. She went back in time and is trying to engineer circumstances to get closer to him and protect him. She looks sad when talking about the matching earring because it belonged to the Kaede from her original timeline.
