I kind of like that almost every time an author is shown, they're really fucked up in one way or another. Some are just bizarre, but usually it feels like there's something deeply wrong with them. Like this makes me think of that woman who was struggling to be an author and just really stuck in life, and then when she decided to stop trying her life improved. It gives me the impression that part of the message of this story is that writing literature breaks people. Or perhaps that broken people are drawn to literature. Maybe that's why Hibiki's writing stands out—she's just that more much more fucking insane than everyone else.

A person that is nominated for awards time and time again actually needs to win to earn something decent? Seriously?
When I go check a award I look the list of candidates, not just the winner. This Yamamoto should be a established and well known author.

In my country, the greatest award is SEA-WRITE award.
Out of the last 5 final candidates, only the one who actually win makes a name for him/herself.
The rests are likely empty hand, most people won't remember them. (And we have 4 more of those guys every year.)

I think there are too many classics and western books that already dominate the market,
so in order to "live off" a book which means a lot of money mind you, you have to be given an award and the media coverage that comes with it.

@Equilibrium Well, we have no idea how much western literature enters Japan, just that little goes outside. Maybe if there's not much of a competition outside you get a good number that can live from writting.

Given that a major theme of this book is the slow death of the publishing industry, and the somewhat quicker death of the literature publishing industry, it's not surprising that most nominees would be doomed to failure, with only the winner having any kind of success. Whether that's realistic or not, I'm not sure.

You'd assume that someone who's been writing long enough and well enough to see four different nominations for the most prestigious award in the country would enjoy some degree of success. But his lack of success at least makes sense thematically, consistent with the rest of the story.

Quitting takes guts, especially if he's as passionate as is meant to be conveyed.

Wonder what this guy will learn from the HIbiki experience.
