I really don't like how this comic treats how Sayu going back home is a foregone conclusion. Everyone is convinced she has to go back home and "Face her past!" but what exactly does she gain by doing this? She'll return to an abusive household so that her mother can continue to emotionally neglect her or suggest she's somehow responsible for her friend's suicide?

What endgame is everyone thinking of here, exactly? What, is Sayu supposed to say "Mother, you shall treat me with love and respect as I deserve!" and then continue living under the same roof, being fed by this same person who could leverage all her power to just say "Nah"?

I understand that the current situation where Yoshida acts as Sayu's guardian but does not have custody over her is not ideal. At any point Sayu's mother could decide to file a missing person's report. Enrolling Sayu into a high school won't work without her mother getting involved, etc. Still, both problems will be solved if they just wait the less-than-a-year amount of time it'd take for Sayu to legally turn into an adult. Until then she can continue studying and reading school books. Once she's of age she could then go for a high school degree and explore options for further education or work.

I just don't see how "Go back to your abuser under the same circumstances that gave them the power to abuse you." is in any way superior to the current setup. Somehow there's not a single person in this comic who's willing to explain why this option is the only option and most definitely not a single person questioning why the alternative would be worse.

I think you missed the point here.
She is not going back to get abused again but to face her mom and the people who made her friend commit suicide.
She changed a lot and now value herself more to be a better person.
She has to go back home since she is still a kid and people will get suspicious if she doesnt appear soon. And police can be involved making Yoshida guilty of keeping stranger kids at his home.
Its for the best she return home then she can talk straight to her mom and tell her everything she was keeping for herself and even so I think her mom couldnt care less, at least she said it and can move on since she is near her majority and just have to graduate normally and leave home as soon as possible as an adult.

Yes, I even used the "to face" verb. The problem is that her abuser would still be in control. It doesn't matter how she faces her abuser. Ultimately, her abuser owns the house and has an income. Sayu has to depend on a guardian because she is still a minor. Her mother would be a far worse guardian than Yoshida even though she has custody, because she's capable of continuing to make Sayu's life hell like she has before Sayu fled. Sayu 'facing' her mother doesn't change that. It doesn't remove her mother's power. It doesn't make her potential future abuse any less harmful than it was before Sayu fled.

I think you missed the point here.

I understand.
The manga made her mom change at the end of the story but in reality things like that are bad habits and hard to change.
People like that would still continue because its almost impossible to face your mistakes and reflect on that.
Still its a fiction and it was written to tell us something and I understand that but yeah you are not wrong about the abusers, in IRL its not so easy to deal with and especially if its your family.
