In my headcanon, the demon lord lost interest in humans after seeing how self-destructive they are. He is also impressed by human's art and culture, so he figured he could just become a NEET and watch humans destroy themselves.

The issue is that it took him 8 generations to put that on the table. I don't care how gung-ho the heroes are, unless they are all complete and utter psychopaths, he should have been able to communicate his lack of desire to fight to them.

Considering that he appears to be immortal, he might not have thought it a big deal to be honest. The heroes all seemed to take the duty very seriously, so he probably thought they'd be a bit annoying to crash with.

His mindset was probably "Yeaaa this one's a bit much, I'll wait for the next one."
