ugh I love this, this chapter is so important 😭 throughout the series we consistently see Hirano feeling anxious/uncomfortable about most things (not wanting to come off as "scary," worried his words might be misinterpreted, getting angry when others think Kagi being his roommate would be a burden to him, etc) but now it's defined that his relationship with Kagi has grown to the point where Kagi makes him feel comfortable. that's why he studies better when he's with Kagi: not only from motivation, but because he's relaxed, his head is clear, he's not worried about things when Kagi's around. he can actually focus.

in the end, I think Kagi letting Hirano know that he sees Hirano for who he truly is (kind, helpful) made Hirano feel safe and seen in his own actions. I also like to believe that's why there was so much focus on Hirano's happiness in doing things for Kagi. Hirano didn't have to work hard like he always does to be perceived a certain way anymore (as a comforting senpai)--he's acknowledged in Kagi's perception of him, so instead it became about wanting to see Kagi feeling good and nothing else. Hirano's safety and comfort is why he's falling for Kagi.. 🥺 aaaa I love them.

I think I've set a new record for how many times I slammed my desk or giggled or went "shut the fuck UP" (affectionately) during one manga chapter. Good god they drive me insane in the best way possible. "I'll tell you once you fall in love with me" KO'd me and that was just 5 pages in...

I want to rattle Hirano around like a dog toy whenever he goes into his denial mode but man, the confusion is written in such a real way that I can't even be mad at him. Also him and Miyano are so funny together but also I love how they are both MVPs in getting eachother's respective romances on the right track. Hirano being so genuinely attentive with other people, with the way he listens closely and then ruminates on their words, is such a good quality to have. And while Kagi does that earlier on too, now he's just going with the flow and letting his feelings be what they are, and it creates such a great dynamic with the two of them being on opposite ends of the having-a-crush spectrum.

Harusono-sensei told me in response to praise I gave that she was relieved that her effort in realistic representation of queerness and life as such was well received by a homosexual as she had tried hard to get it right.
As such, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this relatability was also intentional on her part.

Yes absolutely, to be honest I didn't really realize what that interaction was all about when I read the bonus the first time but after this chapter it makes so much sense. The ways they show and feel affection are totally different but they're both still equally strong love in the end, and these two can make it work! I'd like to think sensei has written it this way completely intentionally, given how thoughtful she has been about all sorts of sexuality and identity related struggles in all her works.

There were flags and alarm bells all over.

Clearly in love for a long time, but never became conscious about physical contact whatsoever.

He really likes muscles and manliness, but it doesn’t turn him on.
Loves just being with him more than most things, treats him special, let him get touchy feely before.
Also agreed to the touchy feely contract, but no reaction to the planned, perfunctory hand-holding or unexplained and unexpected grabbing. (No emotion inherently associated/communicated at the time).
Wants very much to show and be shown affection, but it’s not related to physical anything. (the “needy” or whatever. “Amaeru“ is hard to translate)

I told her that I was ”homosexual“ (may have specified lesbian? There’s no VOD of the stream to check), and was really thankful and moved that there was realism like coming out, Kagi’s realisation that he’s physically attracted to Hirano etc.
She let out this sigh “Thank you very much. I was really anxious about getting it right when I wrote it”.
Rough translation from memory, I’ve written about it several times since so I think I have the basics down.

Super relatable to me. It’s a more severe difference between them, but my wife and I have a similar dynamic, and we’ve had to have conversations about it.
I reaaaaally think this is intentional realism. She cares about getting representation right. I’m humble bragging that she told me so during a stream. She works hard and is nervous about whether or not she succeeds.

I bring that up a lot because it is a happy memory
