I think I can accept this ending. Ultimately it is about change: the characters that could change for the better got happy endings, and the characters that couldn't ended up with the bad outcomes, and that's a reasonable message in context of it all.

It would have been extra neat to see one of the good-change characters figure out the paradox of tolerance and actually kill Akiba, but it's called a paradox for a reason and there's only so much to expect from a bunch of teens.

Overall, wild manga, definitely worth a read if only for the psychological and philosophical introspection mixed with such grueling emotional beats.

I was conflicted the entire way through about who I was actually rooting for - at times I felt like Akiba could've been on the path to redemption, at others I just leant into the "this guy is absolutely fucked up, and that's okay. It's a story." and even up to the last few chapters, I still thought it would be an interesting ending if he "won". It was a generally well-written manga that clearly earns its mass number of "1" scores by the subject matter, by making the "MC" an irredeemable, evil, abusive, jerk - I don't think that's deserved, I wouldn't watch or read something that I knew I wasn't going to like, and review it poorly based on that. A review should assess the quality of the work. But I get it.

Ultimately, I think it was the best possible ending. The focal characters get their happy ending, get to move on with their found family/friends, while the background characters fulfil our desire to see Akiba die and take on that burden that would otherwise have had to sit with out main group - and with the limited characterisation they had, it was still satisfying to see them get their revenge.

Overall, 9/10.

Also, the genderswap tag has been applied to manga with far less genderswap lmao, I have no idea why it was missing here.
