It is darker than a lot of Ghibli, just FYI. It doesn't drop the coziness entirely by any means - there's still gentle humour and "Wow, look at this cool thing" in later chapters - but there's absolutely action and more of the moderately grim violence as well (Ishi carving up the "aberration" is not a one-off). If it was Ghibli, it'd be, I dunno, the feel of Pom Poko but with the dismemberment and angry monsters from Princess Mononoke (funnily enough!), something like that.
