Shirune really showing her swagger, though getting to 1v1 Claude again should be fun to see (especially since she got mobbed the last go-around).
Very fancy & dramatic rescue, though. Very much enjoyed the pacing of Lutecia's "final" thoughts at what she thought was the end. They might not be saying it outright, but that's as good a confession sans declaration as I've ever seen.
Frea hopefully will show up with some juicy additional details of her own. I do think it would have been sweet to see her show up to scrap alongside Shirune, but getting an airtight case against Prince Dickwad from the shadows is also incredibly important--particularly given Claude and their knight order seem like they could be swayed with the correct argument to change sides.

Shit's getting wild, and it already felt like the brake lines were cut. Can't wait to see what's ahead.

Thanks for the TL.

Claude saying "I don't really care about morals, I just back the person in power" is SUCH a death flag. Or if not death, switching sides after he loses the rematch.

So it turns out Shirune's plan didn't start and end with 'storm the castle' and 'now all Lutecia's enemies are dead.' Not gonna die by Leroy Jenkins. She brought Legalese! Legalese is the only way one person can murder someone in a duel and everyone else accepts the results.

I still think the better plan would have been targeted assassination of this jerk prince, so the less-jerk princess was the only remaining choice.

but have you considered "legally-sanctioned spectacle execution(humiliation)" as an alternative choice

jokes aside, I do think Claude's pragmatism makes some amount of sense. He is right, in that a ruler has to consider more than the heart when it comes to overseeing a nation of people. Yes, the Prince is truly abhorrent, but for those who are the sword & shield and represent the law of the land, you want something that looks like stability, and have the authority and allowance to enforce peace without your boss wanting to show mercy to everyone. Not saying Lutecia would be an ineffectual ruler or someone incapable of making hard choices, but if she didn't show that capacity (whether given the chance or not), then I can see why Claude would go the way the guard officially has.

But, pragmatism also means not being stubborn when the winds change. And since we haven't even seen Claude's face yet (that I recall anyway), I don't think their story is done quite yet. Having Claude simply die feels like a waste of a character who is already shown to be more nuanced than the Prince (not a high bar by any means, but) so I think we'll see more play out. (Plus, there was all that honor talk with Shirune during the initial fight when she was injured and Lutecia was captured. That alone points to something under the surface, to me.)

I think the opposite side of "makes hard choices where you sacrifice some to maintain stability" is an odd calculus. I doubt the sacrificed feel very stable in that scenario. Sometimes you get "Sacriifice 1% and we get richer. Sacrifice 20% and we get even more richer!. The math makes sense because it benefits you, and you are the ego that represents the state, so it's good for the state if people suffer for your benefit.

I agree that States sometimes find themselves in difficult circumstances, and mercy is not always useful. But the best (imo) calculus of a good ruler is "making the least sacrifices so the most people benefit from how I implement the system. It's not clear if Claude supports the prince for personal stability, or for Kingdom stability. Whatever stability means (probably not making sure everyone lives indoors and has enough food, eod).

That said, this manga has not depicted the socio-economic conditions enough for readers to determine which royal scion is the better ruler. All we know is that the Prince thinks murdering his sister's supporters is the most expedient way to consolidate power. And I see that and think, "wouldn't power be just as consolidated by murdering the Prince and all his supporters instead?" It's not a calculus based on what's best for the most people, but what's best for the ruling elite. And that's why I say, merc the jerk!

Ahh... even the chances of the princess actually dying were pratically 0 cuz... we got a story to tell (duh), her inner thoughts before the execution ached my heart still, such love!

I'm of the same mind, just trying to rationalize why Claude et al are currently backing the Prince. Could be the Prince was simply "ahead" in the succession race, and so he's being backed because he has the actual foundation/is physically installed in the capital. We definitely don't know what Claude means by "better for us", and we don't have the information (that I can recall) to point to whether it's a selfish comfort, or overall stability.
I'm definitely not on the Prince's side--just saying that there is logic to Claude's words about not ruling a kingdom on kindness alone, even if it's also a touch shortsighted because of the obvious knock-on effects of ruling with callous malice and cold efficiency. People at the bottom tend to get ground up in those sorts of systems, after all, and it remains to be seen on what grounds Claude has picked the Prince at present.

But I mostly was getting at the fact that Claude seems like they're actually susceptible (or maybe amenable) to changing teams. If they end up dying to Shirune, then I just hope the fight scenes are cool to see. But narrative-wise, Claude's character feels like they might be more nuanced in terms of motives and goals, and so I'm just trying to figure out what those are and what they mean for the future of the kingdom and Lutecia's side.

He seems a decent knight. Personally, I can see him dying, accepting that he bet on the wrong horse.

Aside from Claude and the Royal Knights, isn't the kingdom's intelligence agency also on the Prince's side? As I recall, Hein is a member of their wetwork division, and was sent to the House of Heilenberg to keep an eye on a potential threat. Or was Hein and her organization part of a private guild of assassins that's aligned itself with the Prince?

I cannot wait to sew the duel, even of wounded I have no doubt that she will cut off that knights head.

As for the pragmatism comment - we do not have enough info about the current situation for the Kingdom but while hard hand is needed in some cases this prince will be nothing short of a tyrant. And we all know how that ended for French Kings.

It feels like the series is ending soon & it’ll be a short series.. unless this is adapting a light novel.
