Why do people in manga always phrase things in ways that no one would ever say?

You realize that a translation isn't 1 to 1, right? The translator has to approximate what someone is saying in another language, and often that can come out sounding awkward when trying to preserve the original meaning. Also Japan is a different culture than the US or other English speaking countries, so stuff that Japan may consider normal to say comes out sounding very strange in other languages/cultural contexts
