Hitomi’s costume is clearly way more erotic than the others. The open back, the stockings, gloves, and whatever skin tight material was on her chest. I am severely sickened by the fact that we didn’t get a full page spread of multiple angles of her in her costume in color.

Yes or else people would just read them in the bookstore. There are manga cafes especially for reading comics without paying, though, for the price of a drink/hour.

They are sold like these for many reasons
1. yes to prevent others to read without paying [sometimes they print a preview usually 1 chapter for everyone to read]
2. To protect the book from dirt and damage
3. many mangas are included with bonuses such as limited art that is tucked in between the pages so that it won't drop or be picked up by someone else
