Just like everyone's already mentioned, in Japan, Moon's Kirei means basically I love you. It's especially poignant when you remember that in Japan, you can see moon in the night. And night is when you do the honka honka aheehee ooh tralala with your special someone.

Yes, I've read it in numerous manga through my life, but as it was always said when the moon was in the sky I simply thought it was a genuine comment, trying to make atmosphere or the character saying something cool, after knowing the meaning the context changes in several works.

It bums me out sometimes that I’ll never get to truly experience manga as a native reader with a lifetime of shared cultural knowledge and references. No matter how good a translation is, I’ll always be reading it through a filter.
