You underestimate how quickly humans adapt. What you're expecting is the "normal" presentation of how main characters react. But those reactions are almost invariably heavily exaggerated.

I think it's more realistic than it seems when you look at a time when people had to earn what they got instead of expecting to get what they want easily or just handed to them.

To be fair, his pressure point thing on the foot is reasonable in the context. He was doing something to help his foot's health, got a skill for it, knows pressure points are commonly used in healthy practices, and so he made a perfectly logical conclusion about it. The skill just screwed him over to amuse us.

Pickaxe to carve a sleeping burrow in the wall? Makes sense, though he made it way too large and it would be way too hard and take way too long to be feasible for sleeping unless you're going to return to that spot every time you sleep.
