I wonder, would things like vegetarianism and vegan be popular if we were in situation like in this story?

@De_LaBaiGa Wouldn't be possible. Veganism and the like are only possible because of three things: refrigeration, fertilizers and global transportation.

In regions with harsh winter and insufficient logistics to transport things around during a snowstorm(ie. pretty often even today), going vegan just isn't possible.

You can't keep your veggies fresh that long even with refridgeration, fermented vegetables(while good) can't compose your ENTIRE diet, lack of fat will make you significantly more susceptible to the cold, bread/grains alone is extremely inadvisable for your health(even if you managed to choke all that down without butter or milk), berries are expensive and difficult to stock up on(they used to be more expensive than meat), and there simply isn't enough total mass being grown without large-scale agriculture(unless you're fine with eating grass).

It's hard to behead tbh, it's better to stab an artery and drain the blood that way. The blood can be used for making blood pudding and stuff
Better not risk breaking your tools and your life trying to behead a pig.

So it's true that someone actually do that huh. It kinda taboo to kill except by beheading here, because it tend to take more time for the animal to finally died, prolonging its suffering.

@lenovoaxioo That's really interesting actually. If you don't mind me asking, which country are you located in?

It's hard to find unbiased info online about animal slaughter in various countries because of the ethical divide. But from what I have been able to find, it seems like the typical slaughterhouse procedure in the USA, Canada, and most of Europe, (swine excluded) is to:

Step 1: Hoist the animal upside down.
Step 2: Stun the animal using either mechanical force, electricity, gas, or a handheld captive bolt pistol.
Step 3: Exsanguinate("bleed to death") the animal via cutting the carotid arteries and jugular veins near the heart shortly after it's stunned (typically within 15~60 seconds).

@Andoryuuta if you're still curious. In Islam, the way is to behead (instant kill) so no suffering. I dig up Lenovoaxioo's (what a name) profile and yep, they're from Indonesia, where the majority of people are muslims.
