I will note, scanning through the show again, that episode also seems to have a possible sequence break in the middle with a segment about comparing hands, and the segment ends with a barely-hidden expression of love that feels out of place with how it takes place before the segment that adapts this chapter. Where even does that scene come from with the manga? Is it an extra later on or something? I've been seeing some scenes and such that show up in the anime with these re-scans through that don't even show up in these early chapters despite being in the first few episodes that are supposed to cover these. It's kind of confusing.

The anime production team wasn't sure they are going to get enough money to make two seasons, so they cut and rearranged a lot of manga content to fit the whole story in one season. The "second" season anime Horimiya: The Missing Pieces adopts some of the content that was cut. For example, the class trip chapter about Miyamura's bathing issue is in the first episode of it. Quite a lot of manga didn't get adapted at all, while some of the scenes are unique to the anime.

I don't remember where I got this link (Horimiya subreddit, probably), but there's a fan-made timeline matching all of manga to all of anime episodes, including a very complicated (and very not-recommended) instructions on how to watch the anime in the manga order. A snippet as an example:

1. Horimiya, Episode 1
   • Manga Chapters: 1-3
2. Start Horimiya, Episode 2: From beginning to 9:30
   • Manga Chapters: 4
3. Start Horimiya: Piece, Episode 1: After opening to 11:00
   • Manga Chapters: 6
4. Finish Horimiya, Episode 2: From 9:30 till end
   • Manga Chapters: 7, 9

There are no actual spoilers in it, except for titles of chapters: Everything Horimiya Google Doc It also includes a list of not adapted manga content.

I remember making that comment, and a chapter or two later and I noticed it was just they swapped order of chapters and it kinda throws things for a loop because we had this moment with the hand-holding taking place before the fight between Tooru and Miyamura which felt a bit weird for him to refuse she has feelings for him after that. And it's not like they had to change the sequence, either, because the two segments were in the same episode, so why did they swap the order?

It had nothing to do with the main series vs missing pieces thing.

Shit, I even pointed out it was a re-ordering of chapter content in the spoiler tagged stuff.
