The girl has a trauma where she saw the dead corpse of her hamster, so she sees all small cute things as a dead hamster. This extends to things of similar size (kitten). She can't get over it because her "friend" is keeping her dependent on said friend's "positive affirmations". As a result, her trauma is getting worse - she now sees a baby as a pile of dead hamsters.

Sometimes the people you think are close to you are the real monsters.
