I kinda like the open ending for this rather than just closing it up with the final boss defeated, happily ever after etc2.

Yeah, better left open than rushed to an unsatisfactory close. This really feels tragic though, as though Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland, or The Hobbit just kind of ...stopped... halfway through due to the indifference of some money-grubbing publisher.
