Tbf, he never said there's anything wrong with the family, just that he feels uncomfortable with them. That's his own issue that he needs to work through, but I think that's valid.

And specifically, he feels uncomfortable around them because they're all so much more amazing than he is (making him feel even worse about himself,) and he's really conscious of just how much he can't help but seem to bring the mood down. The more he withdraws, the more visibly worried they become, and the more they try to slow down and reach out to him, the worse he feels about holding them back, until by the time the story starts, he seems to socially be doing some kind of "if I just go limp and pee myself and play dead, maybe they'll leave me behind and move on with their lives." It's a problem that basically demands to be run away from because he thinks the problem with his family is himself.

Like, both of their families are crushing them with guilt and shame, but in very different ways. In an early chapter, Narumi's late coming home after work and his mom calls him panicking because she's afraid that after she accidentally praised his sister, he might never come back home. Yes, that's kind of bonkers, but he thinks he made her that way. Oof.

I'm struggling to sympathize with MC. I can sympathize with his trauma over his dad but the whole thing with his family just feels like him acting like a brat.

Like, here you have the heroine with an actually shitty family that despises her and then MC and his family are literally this:

I can see the logic, it’s a case of “I know I SHOULDNT feel bad about this, but I still do because social norms don’t care about circumstances”. Like yeah logically she has no choice, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel lesser anyway. There’s that feeling of “I shouldn’t even take her money!” Or “I should just get a job in secret” but that’s not how the world really works.

Its a bit hard to describe but it’s a shame born of feeling helpless.

Seems like he had an emotionally abusive father and has an inferiority complex with his step-sister. As for the rest of his family, he clearly feels he has no place there after his mother got remarried, which is not uncommon in mixed families.
