I wonder what year it was when this happened? Gyaru characters started off being more of a "Mean Girls" type trope, as bullies. But now they seem almost universally nice and helpful in depictions.

Is it because the culture itself changed? Or did the old idea simply become too tired? Is it a transformation or projection of moe culture?

I don't have the answers, but maybe a Gyaru Research Club would.

Hmm, so presumably somewhere between 2014 and 2016...I feel like I hadn't really seen the pro-gyaru stuff everywhere until a few years after that, but I wasn't exactly looking for it.

There are still cases of mean gyaru characters around anyway; I think the last one I ran into was in Bottom Tier Character Tomozaki-kun. And kind of arguably some characters in Nagatoro, but that's a pretty different dynamic.
