I honestly don't mind the ending, plenty of harem series end this way and that's fine. Especially when there are multiple ladies all on par with each other in their positives. If he had picked one or the other, the readers would still be up in arms with their favorite not being chosen. Damned if you do and damned if you don't. The duality of readers.
