Basically, I want to know whether there are any policies in place that determine the genre tags for a given manga, or if the tags are more of a community consensus/arbitrary type thing.
Furthermore, I'm interested in understanding what the exact definition of each genre tag is, since I couldn't find what definition mangadex is using for each genre tag. I was looking for something like what mangaupdates has, but I couldn't find anything. I tried looking in the Rules section, and the closest I got was the explanation on ecchi/smut vs hentai.
But back to determining the genre tags of a given manga. Take for example Love Fighter Shuravan. The current genre tags on mangadex have it listed as Action, Comedy, Mecha, Romance, and Sci-Fi, which are all accurate. However, on mangaupdates there are two additional genre tags, shounen and harem. The harem tag was most likely added at a later date, since the first chapter had no indication of a harem, but later chapters began introducing more girls with questionable levels of attraction to the main character. However, it's only one additional girl for certain that is attracted to the MC, with at most a third girl questionably. More importantly, the male lead is actively dating one girl and the manga is focused on that relationship and the comedy of his situation in the world, not on "harem hijinks." An argument can be made either way honestly. Should that tag be added just because its on mangaupdates, or should the tags remain the way they are because of any specific reason.
In summary, how are genre tags determined, who determines them, and what's the reasoning behind them. In addition, if a manga "gains" another genre, can any contributor just add it, or does there need to be a discussion beforehand. If two or more individuals disagree on the genre tags, what's the process for deliberating which tag applies?
