How did your anime/manga phase start?

Why do you use manga dex?

  • Because I like to read

  • Because I like to read manga

  • Because I like to read the manga of the animes I watch

  • Because I like to read the manga THEN watch the anime

  • Because I am unemployed and have nothing better to do in life

I have two such events, the first was watching Angel beats and Your lie in April with my oldest sister. So I like anime because my cool older sister recommended it.
The event that made me like manga happened much later. It was near the end of my YouTube phase, when, in the middle of the night, I discovered that a DVD player in the basement had YouTube on it. I didn't want to wake anyone, so I watched pirated anime at extremely low volume. Somehow I found some videos that required no sound to enjoy, I think it was anime meme compilations? Then somehow I was watching videos that showed a page of Yuri manga every few seconds. So, I was hooked on Yuri manga and I've never gotten bored of it. All of that happened within a few weeks, I think. My memories have no strong relation to time.

I started with the French volume 1 of Love Hina at 13 or 14 years old.
At that time, I was in my 2nd year of high school and it was also the time when the high school library finally opened for students.
I found it and read it and I was: "Damn... can manga be that good when it comes to storytelling".
Unfortunately, only the volume 1 was available there. But luckily for me, I was able to "steal" my uncle wifi password so I could access to the internet. And found the other French volumes somewhere in an old website (and I think I still have those .zip volumes somewhere in my external hard drive).
But, unfortunately (again) when I was in 3rd year, the librarian noticed that the manga was an ecchi one so she removed from the bookshelves.

I started to read on Mangadex in 2021 when I wanted to read more chapter of Tonikawa and KanoKano.

This is why I am a big fan of slice of life romcom in general. It just brings me so back to those days when I was an high school student.
And as I "matured", I discovered more themes and genres to enjoy like isekais, harems (lol) and of course  hentai and yuri (still trying lol).

Started with reading Doraemon and Dragon Ball, then Detective Conan. This is pretty common for most manga fans in my country. I then started watching anime of Doraemon and DC as well. My parents rented them for me, and watch them with me. It wasn't just anime and manga, but other western cartoons and comic books as well. Marsupilami, Lucky Luke, Slums, and Disney cartoons were very popular at the time for kids my age. There were also other manga that were popular in my country, but not overseas, like Dragon Quest, Kattobi Itto, and some others.

Mostly the same as me. Except, I read Golden Boy when I was 13. 🤷🏻‍♀️ yeah... That chapter 93-94 apparently were too fucked up for a pure virgin 13 years old girl 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

i had a close friend recommend that I watch sword art online, so of course I did.
was super happy through the first 3 arcs plus the first movie, then aliceation hit and I lost interest.
after that, my brother introduced me to manga and other animes like Nijichu, Lucky Star, Squid Girl, and a few larger ones like Tokyo Ghoul and Madoka Magika.
then, I got unsupervised access to the internet and discovered... things...

We used to have manga magazines localized here (these publications stopped doing well eventually because inflation) and back in kindergarten I saw the one that I like has its anime adaptation aired around the time I go home from school, so I was like, "No way, they made anime out of the manga I read?" and that's it. I'm literally a weeb for lifetime now.

Nevermind I misread the post title at 11PM, I thought it's just about anime

My house's a couple walk away from a huge bookstore, they got manga, comics among other things. Children picture books were unappealing because those books are thin as fuck and the price to pages conversion doesn't feel worth it as a kid. Why would I skip buying lunch (to save up money) for a book I can finish in 3-5 minutes?
Eventually I also get into anime which is the post before this one
