How do you find new manga to read?

I’m pretty new to mangadex, but up until recently I’ve been having a pretty good time thanks to awesome reading controls and the never-ending plethora of translated content to read.

However, one thing I’ve always struggled with is finding something to read in the first place! It’s probably because I’m picky and suck at finding stuff to read, but most manga I’ve been trying to get into as of late either gets axed a hero or lives long enough to become stereotypical slop (and unfortunately it usually does not have to live for that long). This combined with my pickiness when it comes to finding something to read has made the search for new manga to read so unbearable that I often find myself spam clicking the site’s random button hoping that god will drop a good manga in my hands.

So, that brings me to my question: How do you go about finding something interesting to read? I’ve read a few posts for people asking for help finding something and you ninjas are always able to find exactly what they’re looking for in like an hour so please teach me your ways.

I randomly browse kakuyomu or syosetu and sometimes they have a serilization. I've bookmarked so many and added to my Amazon wishlist I just get recommended stuff now too. They're not all good though and I have to sift through it all sometimes. There's actually quite a few decent mangas that aren't uploaded here, some that have even been completed.

I usually look at the author's page and see what other works they have. Even if it's in a different genre, if I enjoyed one work by a particular author (and artist, even if they didn't necessarily write it) there's a good chance I'll enjoy another.

Likewise, you can look at the translation group's page and see what other titles they've translated. It's akin to a recommendations feed (since MD doesn't have one yet, alas).

Look on the updates page for anything that sounds remotely interesting, and check the ratings. Anything under an 8 should be approached with caution, noting that certain genres (say, those that treat LGBT+ relationships in a positive light) can have troll ratings lowering them, so you will want to look at the rating distribution to see where the actual curve peaks out or if there are 1s and 10s spikes you should ignore.

Check out the manga titles subforum and click through those threads to see how people have reacted to a particular title.

Some users have posted their MD lists as public, so browsing those could work too. Never tried that myself though.

It’s probably because I’m picky
Since you said that you're picky, then the obvious answer for me is go to sites like myanimelist,
open a manga page that you liked, then see the recommendation tab related to that manga.

I don't trust Mangadex's scoring, and I also don't really trust Mangadex's tagging.
So, again, if you just want to see what the general wide audience think is good, go to those sites
(for me, it is myanimelist), and choose a tag, sort by score.

Me personally, and I consider myself a visual person.
So I judge by the cover.
If I think the art is good (either well drawn, cute, cool, or intriguing) I'll peek the first chapter

I'm also always open to new things, as I said here
I use mangadex as a way to discover new manga
because I believe that if a title gets a fan translation, it means that at least someone found the title interesting enough that they wanted to share it with others.

Edit: also,
people asking for help finding something and you ninjas are always able to find exactly what they’re looking for
This part is not about finding new read, no? This is just forgetting something.

I don't really look for manga to read at all. I first starting reading manga because I liked their anime adaptations. Then I picked a favorite genre(Yuri) and just read those unless someone recommended something to me. I can't remember any Yuri that I didn't like. Now I just take recommendations from people who have good taste. When I do look for new manga, I just do an advanced search with a bunch of filters for my preferences. Now that I've read what I've written, I don't seem very helpful, but I don't want the time I spent writing this to be wasted, so I'll just as is.

the last thing I need is an invitation to Yuriholics Anonymous, panda
Look, some of your 'friends' may be trying things, thinking it makes them 'cool' or 'hip' or 'skibidi' or whatever they call it today, but you don't need to go that route. We're here for you, and no matter what, you'll be our little purple serial killer guy.

I find good reads through stalking banban
Good thing too, I've been reading a lot of shoujo manga recently.

Next thing we know David will relapse and start rating things again. We gotta make sure he stays on the straight and narrow path!
