The more I read this series the more I'm questioning the smut tag

It's a reference to a The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it is the most important item for any hitchhiker. The destruction of the planet to make way for a galactic highway is a plot point to said story, just like this chapter and most likely nod to the it. The whole premise seems to be a nod to HGTTG

Oh, don't worry about it.
There's a couple of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references in this manga and a towel is a big thing in that. Earth also got destroyed to make way for a galactic highway in Hitchhiker (it happened in like the first couple of paragraphs so it's barely a spoiler), same thing as what's about to happen to the planet in this chapter.

It's actually a trilogy of five books-yes, that's how the author described it. I personally didn't find books 3-5 that interesting; one and two cover the original BBC radio drama and tv series and tie things up nicely. Skip the Hollywood movie. The only thing it has going for it is Snape voicing the robot.

ˇActually the Hollywood movie has the best ending
Adams was also kind of a nihilist plus he died before he could write a 6th book so all the books have kind of downer non-endings
but he was also a conservationist and the movie pays a nice tribute to that
