Depends on the context. Normally we wouldn't say "oh you're this person's female friend". We may do it if we want to specify the difference between girlfriend and a girl friend. Other than that, we may also do it when talking about a person's friend group. "Do you have any female friends" for example.

this is a subtle reference to the fact that Haruki appears to be a normal girl getting pumped full by her onii-chan but is actually a former boy getting pumped full by her onii-chan, which deviates slightly from being perfectly straight.

In my experience, it's rather uncommon since you don't usually mention gender and just say "friend" only. In this situation, since Haruki was originally a boy, Aniki acknowledges the gender of the friend because Haruki usually hangs out with guys.

Obviously, you could say "boy friend" or "girl friend", but those can confuse people since those terms are also used for someone you are dating (boyfriend/girlfriend, with no space in between words). So in the case you need to mention gender, male/female is more descriptive.

Especially since he was only crossdressing because Haruki didn't want her brother to know she's hanging out with a boy.


I'm not a native speaker, but it wouldn't be natural at all. For this to become natural, he'd have to say: "So, she's one of your friends?" to Haruki instead.

Native English speaker here, with a hobbyist study in orthography and linguistics; While it would sound weird to someone who grew up with American English, as they'd prefer a sentence structure similar to what Nolonar stated, the phrasing used isn't unnatural to the point that you'd get weird looks or anything, because of what Broadsword stated; since "Boyfriend" and "Girlfriend" carry entirely different connotations related to dating and romance, the use of "female friend" or "male friend" has seen a considerable uptick in use verbally, though not in text, where the space is much more easily readable and understandable.

"Girl friends" is a lot more natural than "female friends," but consider the following:

Bro: She's one of my girl friends.
Sis: Wait, she's your girlfriend?
Bro: No! I said, she's one of my girl—friends! With a pause!

Since adding "* with a pause" as a note would telegraph the joke, I would have typed, "So, you're one of Haruki's schoolgirl friends?" or "JK friends?"
