Apologies, I understand the actual definition of a trope, just I see people using it while complaining to mean it in a negative sense. To the point it's meant to be insulting towards the work. Almost as if offended that the/a trope was used at all.

I feel that, regardless of how often one sees it, something that makes sense doesn't need to be left out just to 'do something other people haven't done yet', simply because not only is that ridiculous and incredibly difficult, but because it butchers what could have been a very reasonable piece of work.

Hope that explains my stance on the issue, and more what I meant by what I said earlier.

@Kayriel That's a fair stance. I'm just tired of having corrupt nobles always trying to rape the MCs friends/family in these kinds of stories. There are better ways of building intrigue. I like it better when they go after MC directly, possibly on false charges or something.

Agreed, but that's really only possible after the MC's built up a name worth tarnishing. Otherwise, a noble (of this sort) considers themselves an existence on a scale of deities, with their rank as a noble deciding how they stand against the other divines. Anyone who doesn't come up to the feet of that list due to reputation and ability and standing, is just... a toy. "This is fun, I will have fun with it. This is pretty, I will indulge in it. This is mine, I will break it."

MCs for manga like this tend to be male, and most rapacious nobles are typically male, as well. I've noticed most people, but especially asians, have some sort of block against the idea of female rapists who can make good on their attempts. These MCs in such stories also tend to have multiple beautiful female companions, and thus the companions of the MCs become targets since the MC is 'just another guy', he's easily ignored. Until something forces him to get involved and he becomes worthy of attention or malice.

If the MC had status and station that would threaten the powers that be to begin with, then we could have the corrupt nobility going directly for the MC... or, the more clever ones who saw they were overmatched would go for the companions anyway, in an attempt to gain power over the MC who they can't handle. But unless that's met, he's just a fly to ignore.

@Kayriel I agree. But the author could just wait on the corrupt nobles until MC has that kind of standing. Too often the rapist noble is just an example of poor writing. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, just that it's used in a bad way here and most other stories. It would seem I'm not alone either, judging by the thread.

Agreed, that would be a more interesting way of doing it. Despite my own protests and the reasoning behind it, I don't feel like this story is meant to have that kind of depth, though. If it acted like it did, and then this was the result, I would call it bad writing. A failure to meet the intended result. But it does feel like this is meant to be more... simplistic. With that understanding, I can't call this a failure of the writing.

I'd like to read a story with elements like you're mentioning, though.

Why wouldn't an evil, self-indulgent noble be fat? Gluttony is a sin for a reason; if you're utterly evil and born into great wealth and social prestige, it's likely for you to not develop any care for maintaining a "handsome" look and just gorge yourself on all the food that only an aristocratic life could afford.
