Tbh I though the manga was way worse compared to the anime, when I tried to skim through a few pages years ago.
After having read an immense load of diverse manga and then tried this out for real, I can say I was wrong.
This is still very good (I didn't read all of it and will modify my statement if needed).
Obviously, don't make the mistake to read a low quality scanlation when you have mangaplus' version available, it's way better than the first group in this case. Way better.
Edit:
What was covered by the anime is indeed very good in the manga. The next volume was fine (v.33), then the rest was boring.
You can introduce new characters for a new plot, sure, but everything stays in a sandbox and doesn't evolve much further after that for three volumes (and probably further still).
Too stale and uninteresting.
I don't care about more powers being created, more politics (which wasn't represented at all until now), if there aren't compelling characters keeping me reading for them.
I'm not talking about gon and kil, or muruem and his guards for example, or many others, which aren't there.
Just building up any other character relating to the current plot would've been sufficient, but there's just been no interesting one except Kurapika and the fourth prince. Kurapika has zero compelling allies (the mother's prince I consider a liability, even if she's a bit interesting) and can't be on screen all the time, and the fourth prince is just almost not being shown at all.
Imo, the detective intrigues is a polar opposite to gon and killua's previous arcs' vibe.
Carefree and unrestrained against full brainstorming and anxiety.
It's not a bad thing, it's just that there aren't enough well developed and engaging characters that truly embody the vibe of this next "crimes & shemes" arc and that are being used in it, when there were a lot of them reprensenting the correct vibe in the previous arcs. That made the intrigue way more cohesive and engaging for the readers to follow.
Now we just have to wait and hope those walls of text chapters will be transformed into something pleasing after a while, and I don't trust an author which is boring me for 30 chapters straight to make something better as a conclusion of his arc.
So that's bad, and dropped.
