I Am A Hero (was) SO good! It was like if Oyasumi Punpun and The Last of Us had a beautiful baby. But somewhere past the halfway point it all went to shit. It felt like a joke. I read on, hoping against hope that it might return to it's previous quality, but of course it only got worse. The story, the art, and everything else about it. I don't know what happened. Did the author contract writer's block? Did he develop a crippling addiction? A crippling mental disorder? Where did it all go wrong?
I posted the most embarrassing rant on the last chapter. But fuck it, I never do that, I just read stuff and shut up about it because who the fuck cares about hot takes. But I Am A Hero meant so much to me, the first volumes were really top tier stuff, like masterpiece class manga. Then it all devolves to shit, that ending was almost Gantz tier.
Minor spoilers ahead:
The series is a bit rebellious in a way, to write about zombie stuff and do it effectively you really have to tap into the zeitgeist and write something very raw with poignant observations about the status quo. And initially not only did it accomplished that but it also delivered this incredible character study of Hideo Suzuki that was very intimate and very incisive. When Hiromi is introduced, she plays the foil to Hideo perfectly, she made sense as a character in the context of the story as evidenced by the tight balance between her and Hideo. And of course, in this specific genre there's always an element of randomness and chaos that deliberately fucks with the readers' expectations, it's why zombie apocalypses are so very unsettling, but how the story develops Hiromi is almost nonsensical after they go to the temple. And of course, that ending was contrived, pretentious bullshit that resets all of Hideo's character development for whatever reason.
Fuck, I just can't deal with this. The manga had the potential for true greatness, it could have been a timeless classic, but it fucked up so much.
EDIT: Also, I know that I'm being cheeky in the OP, but I genuinely want people to change my mind. Maybe I'm missing something about that ending and maybe someone who appreciated it can explain it to me.
Right now, my word of advice for anyone who is thinking about reading this (you should) is
stop reading when Hiromi is revealed to have Super Zomb™ powers.
