Nah it's 'our' reality, the reason MC didn't realize at first is 1) he has hallucinations to begin with (but he knows that he's hallucinating) 2) he didn't want to acknowledge that this was happening
The reason the media and all aren't responding is because all the people left on the field are the worthless pretty faces that MC was raging on about in chapter 1
The reason why society isn't responding either is because the virus started as a seemingly harmless but extremely contagious flu but then turned out to be zombie apocalypse. While it is only the beginning of the apocalypse to boot, the virus spread very rapidly leaving no room for reactions. Also zombies are supposed to be fiction...
That aside it doesn't seem to have been more than a couple of days since the full blown beginning of zombies attacks en masse but you can see the army reacting
