welp, looks like even the narration calls them Oda-san's "sister". Geez. I mean, the character is literally and explicitly trans, no "hey they just like crossdressing we're gonna dance around the issue." It's just incredible that somehow the author got it through his head to write an explicitly trans character into a manga that keeps bringing up gender issues, but then he goes on to disrespect their identity in even the narration.

@Vainfire author is Japanese, so don't expect him to have the same exact value and terms usage as you (wherever you are from) when it comes to LGBTQ. though I do think author still respects trans in his own way. also while she is indeed trans, she was still legally a woman.

This has never been a good argument. Just because a society holds certain values doesn't mean it's impossible to judge those values objectively. Stoning is a horrendous practice for example, doesn't matter which culture decides it's not. Not to mention, saying stuff like this puts all Japanese people under this cultural blanket. Just because a person is Japanese doesn't mean it should be expected that they are transphobic.
Now, what is confusing is that the author clearly does understand and respect transhood, considering Oda's great description of it. I think it may be the translator deciding the gender here.

Gotta agree. It's weird after he wrote such an insightful decryption of his trouble. But it's possible the translator decided to change 'He' into 'She'.
