I'm so tired of this plot device where the family abuses/neglects/etc. someone out of 'innocent ignorance' or 'circumstances' but 'really actually care so much'.
Yes, okay, things like that very occasionally do happen in reality sometimes, but even when it does it's generally not something where you should go "ah, what great people after all" like it keeps getting framed as. More like "How little fucking attention did you have to be paying for this to be your collective best effort for all the rest of her life, my dudes??"
And yes, it's great for drama, but particularly nasty in these regressions is how it always turns into an accidental aesop of "Oh! If you'd just tried to win over the affections of your abusers more, maybe they'd have been really nice to you! Maybe it was just circumstances and you just need to do the right thing!" Appeasement and excusing of abusers is something people already suggest and/or attempt far too often IRL and really not something that needed all this kind of reinforcement.
