I really don't think a lot of traditional ideas of gender apply to Yukio, considering he grew up turning into a girl every day. I think that's part of why he's such a lovable character -- he's too innocent and blithe of spirit to be seen as experienced at being a girl, but he's too adorable and feminine to really feel like a guy. And it is telling how OK Yukio is with being a girl for good if it came to that. This is actually a very odd entry in the gender bender genre because it's hard to classify Yukio's gender identity considering their life circumstances.

To quote Tygan from XCOM 2: "Truly, I could not have predicted this outcome, though it is intriguing."


Ironically unlike one of the other commenters, I'd be very interested in a chapter or even a small arc where Amano begins turning into a girl. Just to explore how the two would interact. Even if it turned out to just be a dream or something. Or to just get some traditional gender bender flavor out of this. Barring that I am just happy being around Yukio and this manga provides that opportunity!

@petnavis In this case. You can't really say she is trans you are right, this story in no way seems to hint that she has any concrete gender identity. But there are gender bender stories that have trans elements. They are rare in manga but not impossible to find. AMAB characters that get gender-bent can be trans as well as being gender-bent. Most examples that come to mind are stories where the gender-bent protag undergoes no mental change but is more comfortable in a female body. Most stories that have an introverted dude turn into an outgoing girl have serious trans coding in them. In those cases, trans people relate to them because the character's story is similar to their own experience. Then there are stories like Tensei Pandemic where no mental changes occur but most characters are more comfortable in the body they got some even say they wished for it to happen to them. Onii-chan is done for! is also an example where a NEET dude becomes a girl and doesn't seem to want to go back at all. Or Magical Trans where the guy gains the ability to turn into a girl and chooses to be a girl at every opportunity she's presented with.

@Snurt Even if they HAD a preferred sex they'd like to be in they still wouldn't be trans - they'd be someone who flips between male and female. Here's the thing - irl trans will always and forever be beholden to their original sex no matter how they identify - the thing in genderbend stories is that typically the change isn't not done via surgery (And in some of them it is and but it may as well be magic because they can still give birth/get pregnant) but through some divine or supernatural means. You would be seeing a VERY different reaction to trans if they were able to fully turn into the sex they want but until that's the case they're just taking cosmetic surgeries to look like the sex they want to be. I don't think it's fair to say these stories "have trans elements" because the stories are different on a fundamental level.

It just feels like a sleight-of-hand to see people trying to conflate magical/divine based switching of the sex (Or even surgery which results in the person somehow being 100% their opposite sex which is impossible irl) to actual stories that deal with trans issues. Like, okay, there's some overlap with things like coming out but FUNDAMENTALLY one story the person is actually their opposite sex but in the other they're just crossdressing and asking people to address them by their opposite sex - it's a bridge that just can't be mended between the two. Like the moment you can fully turn into the opposite sex you want things start breaking down and losing their meaning and the focus starts being on a new set of issues (Like purists only dating people who've never switched sex and whatnot) which does not reflect real life.

To end this, genderbend is a fetish genre and always has been and always will be - this is the main driver why those who get genderbend typically are able to live their lives normally as the opposite sex. Just look at this manga - pure fap bait and the last page of this chapter basically confirms that there'll be no drama revolving around the love interests sex. It should be insulting to people to call the love interest trans because they're never going to experience the ordeals trans do irl because they're 100% genetically female and male and that type of heavy story is niche and doesn't really sell well.
