I think theyre fine on what they're doing. Right now Ash needs meat shields because his front line got stunned, if they don't jump in Ash just dies.

I was thinking that Ash's party is too big (too many sub-party).
But these death are brutal.
I thought one's might retire by sacrificing arm or leg. (like Godhand but he fully recovered so expecting some actual sacrifice)

I'm thinking Ash will reach the true end but will have lost too much, and his wish would be a choice, bring his companions from this world back or the dying person from earth back. (Hence what the old front-count said would come true this way)
