Hard to tell if this "big brother" is a demon or with the demon, he coudl ahve reacted to the evil energy, not the loss of a companion.
I'm guessing he rected to the evil energy, as a monster would probably be unable to imitate the royal power.
Now for his reason to try and kill the prince he thinks is useless and weak, not much if he himself doesn't think of it being a threat and not being controleld by the demons, that we don't know, could have a adviser that told him to do it for dumb reasons.
Given his pride...maybe he thinks that a weakling taints the royal name just by existing.
