The vast majority of young university professors these days are adjuncts and not tenure track, and most of those have incomes under 50k. Maybe it's not as bad in Japan, but in the anglosphere someone under 40 who teaches university classes is more likely to live below the poverty line than they are to have a six figure income.

Though royalties from published books do change that if they're big printings. If Maria-sensei is wealthy, it's much more likely as an author than as a prof.
