@BimBim85 I'm still not convinced, because his level of ignorance goes beyond just "disinterest". He would have to actively be avoiding information about her, but in order to do that he would have to know something about her. And at the same time he shows a superficial level of concern. He steps in when he sees something obviously wrong (like if she is sick, or her room has no curtains), and thinks he is fulfilling his duties as a fiance. So he notices she is abused sometimes, corrects it, but looks no deeper and actively avoids learning more about her. But still thinks himself righteous.
And he probably also doesn't notice the advances of all the other women throwing themselves at him, which shows just how little they think of her, and that they believe he doesn't intend to honor the engagement either.
And the thing is, she did try to talk to him, so how could those conversations have gone for him to not know her situation? She never once complained about the treatment from the servants? Was he blocking his ears and screaming over her to avoid hearing? How can he think she is clingy if they spend no time together and don't speak? "I had to spend all of 30 seconds telling my fiancee of ten years that I don't want to talk to her, which is the entirety of my interaction with her this month. Such a clingy woman."
The thing that makes no sense to me is that he is surprised by all of this. If he was aware but uncaring, that would be one thing. Or unaware but finding it natural that others hate her, since he hated her too. Even if he was uncaring, aware, and still shocked by her leaving him, I could get it. But how could he be unaware and shocked that other people followed his lead? Plus the contradiction that he believed her father cared for her, and yet he never received any complaints from her father? If the father cared for her, he would have complained about not seeing her at social functions with him, since it would be a slight against her. If the count didn't complain to him about his abuse, why did he expect the count to complain to the other people who mocked her?
