I am amused in ways I shouldn't be by the contrast of slang that I'm too old to get ("bias", I do know what it means, albeit barely, but it still parses weirdly for me), and nascent archaisms which I know from experience that some other folks are too young to parse correctly on the first time even if they, likewise, know the actual meaning ("maid-cum-companion").
@powerneed:
Well, as I was just saying, what slang sounds natural to one person's ears sounds distinctly weird to another's, so... XD
@Adqui:
I also did think it seemed unhealthy, though we're not given enough information here to tell for sure if the protagonist was just speaking in hyperbole.
Though, specifically, the statement that, "nothing else made her really happy", would be the bit I'd be nudging her to maybe go see a therapist about. Maybe the implied overspending out of a feeling of competitiveness, too. Merely being utterly obsessed about something isn't bad, if you enjoy it, it's only a problem when it descends into dysfunction, I think...
